Sunday Saying: The Early Bird Catches the Worm

Today I am going to start another weekly blogpost entitled Sunday Sayings.

Here is where I will share with you a well-known (or not so well-known) saying in English and explain to you what it means.

Todays saying is:

The early bird catches the worm.

It means:

Those who get their first, have the best chance for success.

In business, often times if you are the first one to the market with a particular product, you will have greater success than if you are the third or fourth one bringing the same product or type of product to the market to sell (e.g. iPhone).

In education, some people have the experience that if you wake up early and study, you will have a greater chance of academic success than people who sleep in and don’t get to class on time or skip class and therefore don’t get the information they need to succeed.

Sometimes, if there is a sale on at a store, you might want to be the first one at the store to get the best deals. The same goes for getting up to get concert tickets to see Madonna or the sports tickets for the Superbowl, for example.

If you are going to do something tomorrow, and want to be one of the first ones to get there and get doing whatever, you might say:

I’m going to bed early tonight, because remember, the early bird catches the worm!

Do you have something like this in your own language?
