Sunday Saying as a Song: Hit the Road Jack

I haven’t been very good about posting a song every Saturday and a saying every Sunday, as I spend more time posting things every day on Facebook, but today I figured I’d “kill two birds with one stone” and give you a song that is based on an expression: Hit the road, Jack!

This version is sung by the legendary Ray Charles and has the lyrics, which are pretty simple and great for practice by repetition.

Hit the road, Jack means to get out of here, to leave me alone.

This song is quite famous and it shows how this phrase is often used when a woman is telling her boyfriend to get lost, to leave, to stop coming around – Hit the road, Jack!

You can also use the phrase “to hit the road” to mean to get back on the road and continue your trip. Such as in: When are we going to hit the road? We’ve been at this restaurant for two hours already.

Some other examples are:

It’s getting late, I’d better hit the road.

I wish I could stay longer, but it is late and I really need to hit the road.

He told me he was going to hit the road this morning at 5 a.m.

The Los Angeles Lakers hit the road again this week and will be playing the Chicago Bulls on Friday.

Sting hits the road again this week, kicking off his world tour in Rome.
