Happy Halloween

This afternoon, across the United States, children are dressing up in costumes and getting ready to go trick-or-treating. This annual tradition is loved by every kid I know.

They love to fill their bags with candy, of course, but most of the candy never even gets eaten. The real thrill is to dress up and walk around outside in the dark with your friends.

Many grown ups even get into the spirit of things, wearing costumes to work, decorating their front yards with carved pumpkins, ghosts, dead bodies and coffins. Some people really like to celebrate by throwing Halloween parties with Halloween-themed treats, such as cookies, cupcakes and candies decorated as witches, ghosts, pumpkins, and other typical Halloween images.

As I write this post, my daughter is dressing up as a ninja and will soon be leaving with a group of friends to go to the costume parade downtown, where she will join a few hundred costumed kids and adults as they walk down the street together. They will then turn around and go trick-or-treating at the participating merchants, who pass out candy, caramel apples, popcorn, hot chocolate, and more. After the parade, the kids will hit the neighborhoods with their pillow cases; they need something big to hold all the candy.

After a few hours, they’ll come back home with about 5 pounds of candy each. They’ll eat some, save some for later, and get rid of the rest, usually. Of course, some kids end up eating way too much and pay for it later with an upset tummy.

For the teens, a midnight trip to a showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show always makes for a good time.

All in all, it’s a celebration that kids and adults enjoy. It’s a time to let your imagination go wild and have some fun!

Here are a few pictures to give you an idea of what Halloween looks like here in the U.S.

Happy Halloween!
