Podcast Episode 40 – World Cup 2014

Goooooooool!!!!! (goal that is)

Yes, folks it is that time again – the World Cup! This is one of the most, if not the most, important sporting event in the world. Millions of people will be spending the next four weeks watching 32 teams, representing 32 different countries, compete for the Final Championship!

The Cup started with an opening match between Brazil (the host country) and Croatia. It was exciting to see how much emotion the fans had, and this inspired me to write a podcast about the World Cup.

Many Brazilians listen to the English Fluency Now podcast and I have many private students from Brazil. So I have been in conversation with them about their take on the things that have been happening in Brazil with regards to the World Cup. Many of them are not very satisfied with the fact that the Brazilian government has spent over $11 billion on stadiums and infrastructure programs that may have little benefit to the country after the games. Millions have been protesting, hoping to raise international awareness about the corruption in the government and the need to address social concerns, such as improving healthcare and education, as well as transportation and housing issues.

In this podcast, I talk about some of these concerns as well as the nuts and bolts of the World Cup. I also go over some of the most important vocabulary used in talking about soccer.

You can listen to this episode on this website or on iTunes. If you listen on iTunes, I’d appreciate it if you could leave a positive review. This helps other people find the podcast. Just go to iTunes and search for English Fluency Now. Thanks!
