Can the Brain Multitask?

Many people believe that the brain can multitask, that is, that it can do more than one thing at the same time.

It can’t.

Even though it seems like we can eat, drive a car, and talk to a friend all at the same time, research shows that the brain is actually a sequential processor; it does one thing at a time.

While you are learning English, I suggest that you devote short chunks of time (15 to 20 minutes) throughout your day to concentrate on listening, reading, writing or speaking.

Before you begin, clear away any and all distractions: turn off your phone, close your computer (unless, of course, you are reading online), close Facebook and Twitter, close your door to avoid interruptions.

Set your timer and devote this small amount of time to a single, concentrated, focused English-learning activity. You will be amazed how much more you will remember over time, and how quickly you will be meeting your English fluency goals.

If you don’t believe me, watch this funny video that demonstrates what can happen when you try to do too many things at once.
